Environmental management system introduced another step towards practicing sustainability

Feb 2025. The Eurofins Food & Feed Testing laboratories in Germany are aware of their corporate responsibility to protect the environment and the climate. With the successful implementation and certification of our environmental management system according to ISO 14001, we have reached another milestone in the systematic integration of this responsibility into our operational processes.

What is behind ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. It requires a structured approach and continuous improvement to the planning, implementation and monitoring of measures relating to environmental aspects of our business activities. The certification confirms that our existing environmental objectives are embedded in a robust system that enables us to continually monitor and improve our environmental performance.

Our focus areas: CO2 emissions, energy use and waste management

In line with the goal of the global Eurofins network, our environmental objectives include becoming carbon neutral, monitoring our CO2 emissions (Scope 1-3) annually and implementing measures to reduce them. Monitoring and optimising our energy consumption and our waste management also play an important role.

What we have achieved so far:

In order to achieve our environmental goals, we have so far implemented the following measures at the Hamburg site to date, among others:

  • Power supply: 100% green electricity (Ok-Power label)
  • Own photovoltaic system
  • Energy monitoring system
  • Investment in modern, energy-efficient building and plant technology (e.g. thermal insulation film on all windows to reduce cooling requirements in summer; replacement of refrigeration systems)
  • E-charging stations for cars and e-bikes
  • Conversion of the company's own vehicle fleet to 100% electric vehicles
  • Initiatives to promote climate-friendly mobility for employees (e.g. subsidising the "Deutschlandticket" - a ticket for local public transport valid throughout Germany, gold certificate as a bicycle-friendly employer, annual participation in campaigns such as "Cycle to work")
  • Optimised waste management concept

"With the ISO 14001 certification, we have reached an important milestone in demonstrating that we take our corporate responsibility for the environment and the climate seriously. At the same time, the environmental management system helps us to ensure the effectiveness of our measures and to continuously develop them further," summarises Oliver Fraemke, Business Line Leader Food & Feed Testing Germany.

Who is certified?

In addition to Eurofins NDSC Food Testing Germany GmbH, all laboratories for food and feed analysis at the Hamburg site were certified in the first stage:

The certification also includes Eurofins Facility Management Germany GmbH, which manages the Eurofins buildings, properties and facilities at the Hamburg-Harburg site, and Eurofins Central Logistics GmbH, which provides transport and logistics services within the Eurofins network.

The aim is to implement the environmental management system in all Eurofins Food & Feed Testing laboratories in Germany by 2026.
