New challenges and practical solutions for GMO analysis

Dec 2024. In the autumn, more varieties of GM events not approved in the EU were registered in China. With our new specific detection systems, we can reliably exclude genetically modified maize events from China. With our expertise, we can help you ensure the marketability of your products.

Genetically modified maize events from China

The People's Republic of China is actively promoting the development and cultivation of its own genetically modified organisms (GMOs). To date, commercial cultivation has been limited to GM cotton and papaya. According to the USDA's latest GAIN report, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) announced the successful completion of a three-year pilot programme for the commercial cultivation of GM maize and soy in January 2024[1].

The same report mentions that China will launch a three-year demonstration programme for the commercial cultivation of these GMOs from 2024. In October 2024, several genetically modified maize and soybean varieties based on specific events were officially registered by MARA[2]. With the granting of the corresponding licences, these varieties can now be cultivated in the approved areas.

Currently no approval of GM maize and soybean events from China in the EU

These genetically modified maize and soybean varieties have not been authorised in the European Union. Under EU Regulation 1829/2003[3], a zero tolerance for unauthorised GMOs in food and feed applies. Specific tests are therefore required to exclude of these GMOs and ensure the marketability of the products.

New specific detections in routine analysis from Eurofins

As a trusted partner in GMO analysis, Eurofins GeneScan is continuously developing and validating new detection systems to reliably detect or exclude unauthorised GMOs. In response to the demands placed on GMO analysis by these new Chinese maize events, Eurofins GeneScan has validated specific detection systems for routine testing.
