The 6th International Rice Conference at ANUGA 2023: Here You will find the presentations of the lectures for Download

Oct 2023. From 7 to 11 October 2023 the ANUGA with exhibitors from all over the world took place in Cologne. Eurofins looks back on five successful trade fair days and thanks all booth visitors for their interest and good feedback.

A special highlight this year was our 6th International Rice Conference. Due to the great interest, we have compiled the lecture presentations for you and make them available for download here.

The International Rice Conference, organised and held by Eurofins Dr. Specht Testing & Inspection GmbH, has become an institution in the conference programme of the ANUGA. This year the event attracted again numerous participants from industry and trade. Current and future challenges were addressed in overall 10 lectures.

Lectures of the 6th International Rice Conference:

Topics of the Rice Conference

Alexander Zahm, Managing Director of Eurofins Dr. Specht Express Testing & Inspection GmbH as speaker at the 6th International Rice Conference 2023

Dr Alexander Zahm, Managing Director of Eurofins Dr. Specht Express Testing & Inspection GmbH, speaks at the 6th International Rice Conference about pesticide residues in rice, interpretation of them and about current analytical methods.

The issue of sustainability gets increasingly important in the context of climate change, environmental problems and social tensions and was the main thread running through all lectures of our guest speakers from Poland, USA, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Pakistan.

Development and consequences of rice cultivation

Rice cultivation contributes to 2.5 % of global greenhouse emissions. It is number 2 behind livestock with regard to methane emissions (14 %), but with a much higher mitigation potential (36 % versus 9 %) (Presentation of Lord Sarfraz, FERM Convention 2023). Additionally, the global rice shortage is set to be the biggest in 20 years, which is dramatic for the supply of the world's human population with this most widely consumed staple food. International trading prices might jump dramatically, as experienced 16 years ago. The Sustainable Rice Platform is a global multi‐stakeholder alliance, which addresses these social, environmental and economic challenges by implementing the SRP Assurance Scheme and Chain of Custody Standard.

Residues and contaminants

The lectures from Eurofins were related to new developments regarding contaminant and residue legislation in the EU and new analytical methods. We presented an evaluation of the rapid alerts for rice in the RASFF system of the EU and an anonymous analysis of pesticide findings in our own data base. Another topic are the divergent interpretations of pesticide findings in trace amounts in rice from organic agriculture in the EU member states with severe consequences for the trade. In many instances certain chemicals like phosphonic acid, bromide and phthalimide are erroneously interpreted as residues from not permitted pesticide applications (Nader et al. 2020, 2022).

Authenticity

Furthermore, methods for varietal and geographic authenticity testing of rice were presented based on genomics and stable isotope analysis. The DNA fingerprinting method, which had been recently published by Eurofins (Nader et al., 2013, 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020), not only allows the identification and quantification of rice specialties even in complex mixtures, but gives new insights into the genetic relationships of rice varieties worldwide as well. It allows the control of international trade agreements with regard to quota of certain cultivars eligible for duty-free import and the EU regulation on the protection of geographical indications (PGI) and designations of origin (PDO).

We say thank you!
